House Call: Capitol Improvement by J.A.S. Design-Build

From Janet

J.A.S. Design-Build of Seattle updated this classic Edwardian in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, instilling the interiors with a modern sensibility while maintaining the structure's original stateliness. JAS is especially good at creating intimate family spaces, and for this project they added extensive built-in cabinetry to define areas within rooms and provide abundant storage and seating opportunities.

This is my dream home. Thank you for sharing it and giving me something to fantasize about. I especially love the green vanity base in the bathroom, but only second to the framed archways in the main living space. Stunning.

This spread seems very commercial for you guys. Usually your posts are filled with much more interesting, lived in interiors that project a clear design sensibility. These photos look plastic and unimaginative. In general I love your site though and think your finds are amazing! Thanks....

these photographs look pretty ridiculous. The house is very nice, boring, but nice. The photographs look fake and overly retouched., especially the kitchen. It could be the fact that the photographer pulled all the saturation out of the neutrals. There is no reflective ambient color/light on any of the wood surfaces. They went to far.

I agree with nathaniel that they went to far in trying to create a 'tasteful' home and the photographic retouching doesn't help.

I love the green in the bathroom. Do wish there was a touch more color throughout, it's big and gorgeous, but a little lifeless...

i pity the person who will be cleaning all that woodwork.

the baseboards alone would kill me.

Love the kitchen - I have a weakness for crisp gray and white kitchens.

I'm fascinated to see this identified as Edwardian, a style I'd always associated with a more baroque feel. This looks to me like an American Foursquare, with a strong nod to the Craftsman school.

Aside from the fairly tepid interior colors, though, it's a fantastic house.

This was the last house I worked on before leaving J.A.S for the east coast. It was probably one of the funnest most challenging jobs I've done with in the five years I worked for them. My hats off to the crew and subs who worked on this house. Especially one Miss. Bovino!!!

Looks too much like an upscale hospital...Needs color. Very styled as if it is waiting for Home and Garden to pop in with the cameras.
Nice, but not my cup of tea.

A very clean, classic look. I think the kitchen, in particular, is very interesting if you look at all the details.

The photos are tripping me out though because they look computer generated!
