Hotels & Lodging: Cowley Manor in the Cotswolds

Issue 30 · London Townhouses · July 31, 2009

You won't find any chintz behind the Italianate facade of Cowley Manor, a contemporary country house hotel in the Cotswolds, about two hours outside of London, set on an estate with 55 acres of gardens, lakes, and cascades. According to the Independent, "Lewis Carroll was said to have met the young Alice Liddell in Cowley Manor's gardens," and the whimsical interiors do evoke an Alice-in-Wonderland feeling. The project architects, De Matos Storey Ryan, collaborated with young British designers to create the interiors; each guestroom is different, and all are outfitted with handmade furniture and fabrics. Much of the bespoke furniture for the bedrooms, restaurant, and reception were designed by Kay and Stemmer.
