Architect Visit: Feldman Architecture in Bernal Heights

From Julie

Feldman Architecture was recently charged with repairing, modernizing, and expanding a dilapidated but historic 1860s cottage in San Francisco's Bernal Heights neighborhood. The architects added a kitchen/study to the rear of the structure to create a light, airy modernist home that retains the rustic charm of the original cottage.  We find the mix of rough wood and stone mixed with clean glass and metal particularly appealing.

I can't put my finger on it but their work has a real freshness to it. Really like seeing this...

I love the wood planks on the low wall in the dining room.

This is beautiful. Do you know where those lovely pendant shades above the dining table are from?

The Pendant looks like the Le Klint 171

This is an absolutely beautiful design! I love wall in the kitchen, and the planks int he wall in the dining room. A wonderful marriage between the past and the present.

This has a really nice balance to it. Often you can achieve an overly clinical finish and it looks like the inside of a hospital at times, but this is very nice, and a modern home.

was wondering if that was reclaimed wood in the home? Love the stone work!

Nice work, good to see architects living in the real world. In my 30 years in the building trades I can say without hesitation that everyone loves the look of natural materials either finished or unfinished. Wood, stone etc, all good. Concrete, steel, vinyl etc., not working for most folks. Open concept has an initial appeal to youth and the uninformed but people who know don't like it because it is hard to furnish and noisy.

Keep it simple fullas!

I have been watching this project since it started from my house down the street. What a treat to get to see the inside finally! Thanks for the pix.

Everything Jonathan Feldman does is so beautiful--open and modern and grounded in natural finishes. I love this so much. I love all the wood and white and the loft windows. When I win the lottery. . .

Look for another SF Feldman project in the November 2009 issue of Sunset. An updated Victorian that will make you weak in the knees.

Love it ! Can you tell me where the windows are from?

Thanks !!
