Architect Visit: Birdseye Design in Vermont

Discovered via Farmhouse Modern: A modern interpretation of a vernacular farmhouse in North Ferrisburgh, Vermont. Landscape designer Keith Wagner, the owner, worked on the design with Birdseye Design, a design/build outfit that created a living space surrounded by utility buildings in an open agricultural setting. The project won an AIA Honor award in 2004.

Beautiful grounds.
Simple, elegant design.
My main criticism would be its energy use. I have gotten an eye for the details of energy efficient design in northern climates, and there are a few clues that indicate to me that this is an energy hog. The walls are too thin - for VT they should be 10 in minimum (8 in cavity), giving about an R 28. Garage doors should be used for garages - they are incredibly leaky. I'm sure there's radiant heat, but even that won't keep you warm. It would have taken very little to bring this up to architecture 2030 standards. I recommend that the designer get with PassivHaus for future projects.
