Our favorite gift wrapping is tried-and-true butcher or Kraft paper adorned with utilitarian twines, ribbons, or tapes. Following are a few ideas for simple gift wrapping.
Above: Baker's Twine; $18 for a set of three wooden spools at Sundance.
Above: I discovered Hug Snug Seam Binding a while ago and love it for gift wrapping; $9.95 for a 100-yard roll; available in an array of colors at Sew True.
Above: Japanese Masking Tape; $12 for a set of three at Design Within Reach.
Above: Pacon Kraft Wrapping Paper; $25.09 for a 200-foot roll at Amazon.
Above: We love using tea towels to wrap kitchen gifts, creating a two-gifts-in-one package. We especially like San Francisco–based Studio Patro for tea towel-as-gift-wraps.

Such lovely, subtle ideas. I also love grosgrain ribbon (blue is my favorite) with white butcher-type paper. "Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes" to your "brown paper packages tied up with string."
Here are some of my ideas for recycled gift wraps. A little more eco friendly with things you have around the house. http://www.simplymodernmom.com/2009/08/fridays-5-at-5-gift-wrap/
