From Julie:
New from Belgian company Vincent Sheppard, the vibrantly colored Joe Chair has a distinct LA feel. The Lloyd Loom woven paper rattan and chrome-plated steel chair is available in colors like fuchsia and indigo, as well as more familiar neutrals such as natural and white. (Read about Lloyd Loom furniture here. In 1917, Marshall Lloyd, an American, patented the process of twisting kraft paper around steel wire; the furniture became the rage in Europe and was found on the promenade decks of luxury liners and on the Zeppelins.) The Joe Chair is £239 at UK online store Lloyd Loom Furniture.

This photo by Johan Fowelin got us thinking about pure white clocks.

When you think of LA, you don’t immediately think of loft living. Aside from the streaming sunlight, this Melrose Place space has a New Yorkish vibe. We like the metal cabinetry, the pot rack (see Kitchen: Open Rail Storage Systems), the galvanized metal pitchers, and the vintage industrial lights.

We were delighted when we learned that one of our favorite LA haunts, Tortoise on Abbot Kinney, had opened a second store nearby. The first store—now renamed Tortoise General Store—still focuses on well-designed, traditional Japanese items for the home, including such classics as Sori Yanagi’s birch handle flatware and Isamu Noguchi’s Akari lights, as well as more recent pieces (such as the Re Form Pot candle holder by Landscape Products shown below). The new, larger Tortoise store features furniture, vintage Japanese finds, and other unique artifacts discovered by owner Taku Shinomoto, as well as pieces from his own line of simple handcrafted furniture. Well worth a visit.

The VP Globe is one of those fixtures you have to see in situ to appreciate (Francesca has it in her Brooklyn Heights study). Designed by Verner Panton in 1977 of transparent acrylic Lucite, it was reissued not long ago; the VP Globe is available at YLighting for $2,195 for the 15.5-inch size and $2,750 for the 19.5-inch size (which is less than vintage versions). We think of it as sculpture in the form of a light fixture.

Los Angeles–based architect Barbara Bestor wrote the book (literally) on bohemian modern. We love her refreshingly low-key approach, on display in her own Silverlake abode, especially this easy-to-recreate dining area (see an LA Times slideshow of Bestor throwing a dinner party).

Below: The Blu Dot Strut Dining Table is available in ivory, robin’s egg blue, olive, or watermelon; $1,299 for the 90-inch-long size, $1,099 for the 75-inch size at Design Public.

Below: Bestor uses the Philippe Starck Objet Perdu chair designed for Driade (and reminiscent of Gio Ponti’s Superleggera Chair, designed in 1957). The Objet Perdu chair is available with either a natural wicker seat or a black interlaced plastic seat; $1,264 for a set of two at Unica Home.
Below: This pair of Object Perdu chromed side chairs is currently available at Home 114 through 1st Dibs.

Below: Bamboo rattan Leran Pendant Lamp; $89.99 for the 24-inch size (smaller shades available) at Ikea.

One of our favorite companies is Cisco Brothers in LA. Founded by Cisco Pinedo, who began making custom furniture out of his garage in South Central in the early 90s, the company has grown to encompass six retail showrooms (including a gallery at ABC Home in NY).
In 2006, Cisco developed the Inside Green™ method of construction and became the first designer to create 100 percent FSC Pure sustainable upholstered furniture. Cisco uses FSC Pure certified woods for upholstered furniture, reclaimed hardwoods for a collection of case goods, and water-based glues and environmentally friendly detergents to wash all fabrics. Natural and organic upholstery and slipcover options include linens, hemps, and velvets in shades of oyster, lichen, stone, and graphite.
