Add an unexpected glimmer to tiled surfaces with Susan Jablon Mosaics Stainless Steel Collection Tiles. Exterior- and interior-rated (yes, they can be used in wet conditions such as a shower), the tiles feature a porcelain core that is fully wrapped with stainless steel. The tiles are glued to mesh for installation.

From Janet:
I love the idea of adding a whimsical flourish to a bathroom while hewing to a clean, traditional look. Case in point: the Pun Tile Collection from Ascot Studio (spotted on Trendir). Based in Sassuolo, the center of Italy’s ceramic industry, Ascot Tile creates witty monochromatic subway tile embellished with subtly raised letters. Tired of white? The Pun Tiles are also available in several colors and in two sizes: 12.5 by 25 centimeters or 25 by 25 centimers. In North America, Ascot’s Pun Collection is carried by Canadian company Stone Tile; contact them at (866) 669-1103 (toll free from North America) to order.

From Julie:
Melina and Dodd Raissnia operate Peace Industry out of a small storefront in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley district. About five years ago, the couple traveled to Iran to establish their rug-making enterprise. After trekking through obscure mountain camps and villages, they discovered a small group of natives still practicing the ancient nomadic art of felt making. The result is Peace Industry, a line of rugs designed by Melina and manufactured in Iran, where the couple owns a workshop and employs local artisans. The rugs are hand made in small batches from 100 percent lamb’s wool and natural dyes and can be ordered directly from Peace Industry (they also do special orders). Design Within Reach recently began carrying some pieces as well.

When Los Angeles transplants Caitlin and Samuel Dowe-Sandes set about renovating a 250-year-old-house in Marrakech’s walled city, their experience formed the genesis for a tile business they named Popham Design. Popham Design uses local Moroccan artisans to hand-make cement tiles in an array of designs and colors that combine traditional elements with a contemporary twist; almond trees, arches, and donkey cart wheels are all sources of inspiration. For ordering information, go to Popham Design.

Great idea for obtaining an instant rustic look. British interior designer Jane Cumberbatch suggests lining wooden strips to the wall to obtain the look; see more of her ideas at Pure Style.
