Sometimes it’s too easy to forget the classic standbys: director’s chairs used as dining chairs; French ceramic rise and fall pendants; long refectory tables. This casual yet stylish kitchen in the English countryside is easy to copy; with the help of gallons of cream-colored paint (try Pointing from Farrow & Ball).

Below: The Refectory Farmhouse Table in English oak is a reproduction of an antique; with extensions, it can be expanded to 120 inches. $5,900 from Leonards, a family-owned Massachusetts workshop specializing in antique and reproduction furniture (they also recently opened a store in Westport, Connecticut).

Below: Another option: the 96-inch-long Longmont Table; made from rustic reclaimed pine. $1,795 at Sundance.

Below: Exhibitor 18-inch Director’s Chair with hardwood frame and cotton canvas fabric; 18 different fabric colors, four frame colors; on sale for $56.99 at Directors Chair.

Below: The iconic Catuffe Lamps are handmade by brothers François and Frédéric Catuffe in the Tarn region of France and feature antique bronze fittings, braided electrical cording, and porcelain shades available in blue, cream, jade, red, olive, gray, at the French House. Available at Marston & Langinger for $395. In the UK, available at the French House for £169.

Claesson Koivisto Rune’s house for Ingegerd Råman features a restrained palette of black, white, and red. We especially like the way the designers used black light fixtures throughout the house. For more ideas, see 10 Easy Pieces: Black Pendant Lights, Outdoors: Stockholm Fixture, and Lighting: Leucos Pendant.

This summery living room is easily recreated with yards of ticking stripe fabric, a collection of glass bottles, and a pair of simple, whitewashed cupboards. For a similar sofa, investigate the George Sherlock Extended Two-Seater Sofa from England, available in the US only at Ruby Beets. Mitchell Gold makes a far less pricey version: the Coleman Sofa.

Below: 19th Century Two-Door Cupboard with Original Hardware; $4,800 at East Meets West Antiques in Los Angeles.

I fell hard for this Scandinavian modern laundry room on the Asko site: The white and steel gray palette is soothing and clean. If you are lucky enough to have a laundry room, recreate the look with white tiles and white cabinets (a can of white paint will do the trick, or consider resurfacing the cabinets in Formica).

Below: The woven plastic Vera Rug is ideally suited for wet rooms, and it’s amazingly soft underfoot (Julie has one in her kitchen). $150 for the 59-inch length; $222 (currently on sale for $138) for the 89-inch length at Scandinavian Details.

Below L: The Blanco Commercial Pull-Down Faucet is available in polished chrome or stainless steel; $589 at Designer Plumbing Outlet. Below R: A less expensive option is the Pegasus Commercial-Grade Faucet with flexible arch spout (note that it lacks a separate fixed spout); $352 at Designer Plumbing Outlet.

Below L: The Rolling Laundry Bin by Holger Nielson and Jette Egelund in stainless steel is from one of our favorite companies, Vipp; $290 at the Scandinavian Design Center. Below R: The Umbra Chrome Laundry Hamper is another good choice; $59 at the Container Store. Also see our post 10 Easy Pieces: Laundry Hampers for other options.

Below L: Store laundry odds and ends in the Rhombus Tote in Stone; $12.99 at the Container Store. Below R: We also love the simple Aluminum Box for $25 at Canoe Online.

One of the prime requirements of modern family life: a communal computer station. (Webkinz? Stardoll? MapQuest?) I created an instant work space in a corner of our sunroom with a few easy-to-source elements.

No need to get overly complicated. Restaurant wire shelving, schoolhouse light fixture, Eames chairs, stainless-steel countertops, and buckets of white paint make this kitchen breath summer. The dark stained floors offer contrast and grounding. For more ideas go to our earlier posts, Kitchen: White Accessories and Kitchen: White Enamelware. Photo by Michael Wells.

A Paris apartment from the portfolio of photographer Guy Bouchet. The zen-like interiors are so magically minimal there’s not much to copy: for the dining room, consider the Reform Table from Design Public and consult our 10 Easy Pieces: Dining Benches post for seating ideas. Design Within Reach carries the orange Icon Pendant Light. For ideas on recreating the bathroom, refer to Bath: Back to Black and Bath: Albion Bath Co. Ltd.

Spotted on Emma’s DesignBlogg: The Hotel du Nord on Bornholm, a small Danish island southeast of Sweden’s southern coast. Located in an old print factory, with views of the sea, the hotel features nightly communal dinners for 20 and a child-friendly atmosphere (boxes of dress-ups, crayons everywhere, toys galore). I like the pared-down interiors with sea grass matting, Eames side chairs with dowel bases, Ikea shelving, black Luxo Lamps—lots of ideas to copy.

From Julie and Janet:
This kitchen for an artist on Martha’s Vineyard by Hutker Architects features a cheerful yet muted palette. What appears to be a window cut into the stainless wall is actually a pocket door that slides open to a work space with storage cubbies and a workstation, creating a sense of openness. Full overlay maple and laminate cabinets in shades of eggshell blue and pale yellow add a subtle dash of color to the space.
