Best of Kitchens: Durat Surfaces

From Sarah:

This custom pink kitchen unit is made from Durat, a highly durable surface material made from recycled plastics in Finland (somehow recycled Scandinavian goods just sound better). The company also offers its own minimalist line of baths and sinks; for more information, go to Durat. We should note that Henry Built, our favorite custom kitchen designer, offers Durat surfaces in their fabrications (see white counter below).

Kitchen: Recycled Jar Tops

From Sarah:

Here’s a brilliant idea: tops that can be twisted on to old jars, giving them a new lease of life. Particularly useful for outside tables, when you don’t want to use plastic but worry about breaking your favorite pitcher. Set of five tops to fit standard size jars, available from Pedlars for £13.50.

Slow Design: Vintage Chalkboard

From Julie:

Spotted on Design*Sponge: a source for vintage frames turned into chalkboards. Blue Bell Bazaar on Etsy scours flea markets for old frames and repurposes them as whimsical chalkboards. Prices start at $48.

Slow Design: Vintage Towel Bars

From Janet:

My all-time favorite fixture purchase was a simple vintage nickel towel bar I installed in my Seattle bathroom (I wish I had unscrewed it and taken it with me when we moved). If you’re after a similar vintage look in your bath, consider searching for old fittings at one of the many online architectural salvage yards; Hewn and Hammered has a great listing of online resources. (For those in pursuit of new fixtures, see 10 Easy Pieces: Towel Bars.)

Kitchen: Stirsby Wooden Stirring Tool

From Julie:

A one-off from the Walker Museum art shop: the Stirsby Wooden Stirring Tool for $16. Designed and hand-crafted by Twin Cities artisan John Danicic, each Stirsby is made from non-first-growth salvaged hardwood; no two are exactly alike.

Architect Visit: Alex Scott Porter

From Julie:

While perusing lighting designer Lindsey Adelman’s blog, we came across the work of NY architect Alex Scott Porter. After graduating from Columbia’s School of Architecture, she worked at the New Jersey Barn Company, disassembling antique timber-frame barns and designing reassembled structures; later she worked for the Polshek Partnership and for Francois de Menil. There’s a lot to like about this barn-like house in Amagansett Porter designed, starting with the fact that she used characterful salvaged timber throughout the project and created a seamless indoor/outdoor feel.

Shoppers’ Alert: Brooklyn Flea Market

From Julie:

Sunday, April 6, Brownstoner and friends hold the first 2008 Brooklyn Fleamarket in Ft. Green, from 10 am to 5 pm, rain or shine, featuring a wide range of vendors; categories include vintage furniture and architectural salvage (Olde Good Things, Demolition Depot, and Reclaimed Home) as well as local furniture makers, craftspeople, and designers. Design*Sponge will be curating a section called Design*Sponge Collective, featuring artists such as Lena Corwin, Deadly Squire, Sian Keegan, and Wayne Pate. Go to Brownstoner for more information; the helpful Layout link provides a map to the vendors.

Below: Prague Kolektiv, which specializes in midcentury and modern Czech design, is among the vendors.
