From Sarah:
Summer is in full swing in Napa, the hammock is up and I just bought a couple of extra chairs for the garden from Snow Peak, whose high style camping gear we recently featured. The chairs (somewhat reminiscent of the Butterfly chair) are great additions, and although they can be easily folded up and stored off season, I plan on using them in a guest room or office.
Below: Bamboo Chair Long available from Snow Peak for $129.95. Stainless steel and wood with canvas.

Below: Another great Japanese design now available in the US is the Ny Rocking Chair. It is supremely comfortable; my sister had one in Japan and she used it both indoors and out depending on the season. They also fold flat, making them easy to store, but like the Snow Peak, why would you not want to use it year round? Available from DWR for $450.

Below: The director’s chair was the inspiration for the Ny chair above. A classic chair and useful for adding extra seats to an outdoor dinner table. Low Back Director’s Chair by Telescope in a selection of canvas colors for $99.

We recently came across the new Amsterdam apartment of the mysterious Minimalist Flickr Guy from the Netherlands. He’s got a turntable, we don’t. He has no sentimental clutter. He painted the beautiful old wood floors high gloss white (”before anyone comments on how painting wood floors is such a crime, my decision is made,” he says). He has a Vernon Panton Topan Suspension light, a hard-to-love brown shag rug by FM Janssen, and a Euro airport-esque Lotus lounge chair, by Dutch designer Rob Parry (a former student of Gerrit Rietveld) reissued by Bränd Furniture. Also an Eames wire-base table and an Eames-like armchair. See his old Amsterdam apartment at Flickr, which we first spotted on the excellent Reference Library.

From Sarah and Julie:
We have fallen hard for this Volata dining table by Joerg Boner, especially paired with charcoal Eames shell side chairs and a chartreuse rug. Unfortunately, the table, produced for Swiss company Tossa, is not available in the US. But you can recreate the look using the elements below.

Below: Centerbrook Table, designed by architect Mark Simon for Curran. Handcrafted from solid Appalachian black cherry with a choice of five stains; 96 inches long, 48 inches wide, 30 inches high. $2,900 at Curran Online.

Below: Another option: Matthew Hilton’s oak (also available in wenge) Cross Extension Table for Design Within Reach; expands from 79 inches to 116 inches long. $2,750 at DWR.

Below: Eames Arm Shell Dowel Base Chair; $399 at Modernica. Available in 16 colors (charcoal shown) and with maple or walnut dowels.

Below: Swedish company Kasthall, designers and manufacturers of woven and handtufted rugs, recently opened a showroom in NYC. The 100 percent woven Bloc/Cord Olive 32 rug can be ordered in any size, with stitched edges.

For the thrifty, Flor Fedora Carpet Tiles in chartreuse, $6.99 for each 50 cm square.

From Sarah:
Berkeley-based architects Fernau Hartman designed this modern rustic space for a house in Bolinas, the Marin County bohemian coastal enclave. When retracted, the garage door dissolves the boundaries between indoor and outdoors, and the daybeds on wheels can function as lounging areas in either locale.
