I have a weak spot for utilitarian industrial fittings. This weatherproof on-off lever switch of die-cast zinc (available at my corner hardware store or any Home Depot) would work indoors as well, especially in a minimalist interior. $7 for the single; $10.50 for the double Steel City Dry-Tite switch-box cover with lever at Thomas & Betts.

Switch plates proliferate in our homes and daily lives, and yet we tend to ignore them. How many lovely rooms are marred by grubby ivory plastic switch plates? Here are ten simple, high-quality, timeless options for all your switch plates needs. Overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of plates in your home? Upgrade one room at a time. Note: While we show single toggle models, all of these are available in dozens of configurations for outlets, dimmers, and so on.

Ever try plugging in your Mac and cell-phone charger at the same time? Thanks to the proliferation of bulky plugs on home appliances and electronics, many of our dual sockets can accommodate only one plug at a time. Designed by a woman engineer, the 360 Electrical Rotating Duplex Outlet solves the problem. Both the top and bottom sockets rotate in either direction a full 360 degrees, providing the flexibility needed to make full use of both outlets. Available in four colors at Ace Hardware for $11.99.

Our friend Jerome Buttrick of Buttrick Wong Architects clued us in to this sleek, sculptural cabinet hardware by artisan Carl Martinez, who hand-makes and finishes each piece in his lower Manhattan studio. Imagine how a pair of these knobs could ennoble an otherwise unremarkable midcentury piece.

We first spotted the wares of Whitechapel Ltd. on Materialicious. Founded by an English-born and -trained furniture maker (now based in Jackson, Wyoming), Whitechapel Ltd. carries a full line of beautifully crafted, historic hardware, much of it imported from the UK. (Read his highly literate Company Profile to get an idea of how seriously he takes his craft.) Despite the relatively high prices, these fixtures are well worth considering for their beauty and heft; it’s amazing how high-quality hardware can upgrade an otherwise so-so kitchen or piece of furniture.
