Remodeling Redux: Metal Toggle Switch

From Janet:

I have a weak spot for utilitarian industrial fittings. This weatherproof on-off lever switch of die-cast zinc (available at my corner hardware store or any Home Depot) would work indoors as well, especially in a minimalist interior. $7 for the single; $10.50 for the double Steel City Dry-Tite switch-box cover with lever at Thomas & Betts.

Remodeling Redux: 10 Easy Pieces Switch Plate Covers

From Janet:

Switch plates proliferate in our homes and daily lives, and yet we tend to ignore them. How many lovely rooms are marred by grubby ivory plastic switch plates? Here are ten simple, high-quality, timeless options for all your switch plates needs. Overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of plates in your home? Upgrade one room at a time. Note: While we show single toggle models, all of these are available in dozens of configurations for outlets, dimmers, and so on.

Below: Single Toggle Switch Plate Basics in high-quality hot-forged brass, $15 each available in 14 finishes at Rejuvenation Hardware. Shown, clockwise from top L, in black enamel, brushed nickel, white enamel, and brushed brass.

Remodeling Redux: Rotating Outlet

From Janet:

Ever try plugging in your Mac and cell-phone charger at the same time? Thanks to the proliferation of bulky plugs on home appliances and electronics, many of our dual sockets can accommodate only one plug at a time. Designed by a woman engineer, the 360 Electrical Rotating Duplex Outlet solves the problem. Both the top and bottom sockets rotate in either direction a full 360 degrees, providing the flexibility needed to make full use of both outlets. Available in four colors at Ace Hardware for $11.99.

Remodeling Redux: 10 Easy Pieces-Towel Bars

From Sarah:

Towel bars may seem like an afterthought (compared to the larger issues of sink, bath, tile), but if you’re like us you spend hours agonizing over finding the right one. Here are our top selections of wall-mounted towel bars. All prices refer to an 18-inch bar, unless noted. N.B. We are assembling a follow-up post of vintage towel bars; some of the best come from salvage outfits.

Remodeling Redux: Carl Martinez Hardware

From Julie:

Our friend Jerome Buttrick of Buttrick Wong Architects clued us in to this sleek, sculptural cabinet hardware by artisan Carl Martinez, who hand-makes and finishes each piece in his lower Manhattan studio. Imagine how a pair of these knobs could ennoble an otherwise unremarkable midcentury piece.

Remodeling Redux: Sugatsune Folding Pull Handle

Every once in a while we find the perfect piece of cabinet hardware, which is always a thrill. Janet and I discovered the Sugatsune HK Folding Handle the other day. Ideal for when you need a flat-laying hardware pull.  $14.73 at Home Decfor Hardware.

Remodeling Redux: Whitechapel Ltd. Hardware

From Julie:

We first spotted the wares of Whitechapel Ltd. on Materialicious. Founded by an English-born and -trained furniture maker (now based in Jackson, Wyoming), Whitechapel Ltd. carries a full line of beautifully crafted, historic hardware, much of it imported from the UK. (Read his highly literate Company Profile to get an idea of how seriously he takes his craft.) Despite the relatively high prices, these fixtures are well worth considering for their beauty and heft; it’s amazing how high-quality hardware can upgrade an otherwise so-so kitchen or piece of furniture.

10 Easy Pieces: House Numbers

From Janet:

As summer weather lures us outdoors, our home’s exterior suddenly seems more important. What better time to consider a simple facelift or personality adjustment with new house numbers?

Below: Font enthusiasts will like this: Architectural Numbers by Weston is a company that lets you choose your font, material, and finish; they then custom manufacture your number and or letter combination. Choose from 41 font styles (including classics like Helvetica, Futura, and Times Bold) and 12 different finishes. (N.B. You can order in any size, but they say the standard is 5 inches high.) Another company offering a variety of custom-made numbers in your choice of 114 different fonts is Accurate Image.
