Lighting: Bright Idea

From Janet:

Until now, we’ve thought of chandelier light bulb choices as being limited to the tacky flame-tip variety. But a couple of days ago, we spotted this great idea at Therien Antiques in San Francisco (along with a bonus dripping-in-jewels Danielle Steel sighting). The clever antiquists at Therien use appliance-indicator bulbs in their chandeliers for a much more tasteful, discreet effect.

A full range of sizes and wattages is available at your local hardware store from the usual suspects: Satco, Phillips, GE, Sylvania, and the like. Be sure to select bulbs that are compatible with your fixture.

DIY: Rustic Wall Slats

From Sarah:

Great idea for obtaining an instant rustic look. British interior designer Jane Cumberbatch suggests lining wooden strips to the wall to obtain the look; see more of her ideas at Pure Style.

DIY: Patchwork Upholstery

From Janet:

I have a closet shelf stacked with vintage Turkish fabrics that, because of their narrow width, I had written off for any purpose other than decorative pillows. No longer. During my recent trip to London, I paid a visit to Liberty, where I spotted a collection of vintage sofas and chairs upholstered in an artful melange of antique fabrics. The lesson? Take one old piece of furniture plus several pieces of vintage fabric, collaborate with an upholsterer, and you have something both new and old and utterly original. True recycling.

Another idea nicked from Mint, London’s version of NY’s Moss. Wrap your sofa’s battered legs in an eye-catching vintage fabric.

Lacking a message center? Paint an old globe with blackboard paint and use it for notes. Go to Flickr for instructions:

DIY: Rustic Chandelier

From Julie:

I recently spotted this mountain laurel chandelier at Rustic Designs for a rather steep $2,375. Why not gather a bundle of manzanita branches, lash them together with twine, and threada strand of white lights through the whole thing? Go to Manzanita for sandblasted manzanita branches by the bundle and Smith and Hawken for white cafe lights.

DIY: Garden Stools

From Julie:

Take a cue from these Tupilak tree-stump stools by French company Bleu Nature; these have been topped with lacquered disks, but why not paint your own? Martha Stewart took this idea and ran with; read her Step-by-Step Tree Table Guide.

Bath: Rustic Toilet Brush

From Julie:

UK company Baileys Home and Garden had a great solution to the dreaded issue of where to put the toilet brush. The terra-cotta pot/turks head brush combo is no longer available. It would be just as easy to put together your own set by rummaging in the tool shed to find a mossy old flower pot and combine with (below L) a natural coir and wood brush for $7.99 at Green Boat Stuff or (below center) an untreated beechwood and Tampico fiber brush, £2.95 at Spirit of Nature, and (below R) a Long Tom greenhouse finish Guy Wolff pot for $20 at Wakefield Studio.

Slow Design: Recycled Water Carafe

From Julie:

Recently, Chez Panisse in Berkeley started serving filtered tap water and house-aerated sparkling water in lieu of bottled water. Make Alice Waters proud and use repurposed clear wine bottles (soak off the label first) as water carafes; just fill with cold water from your Brita.

Windows, Floors & Walls: WOW Wallpaper

From Sarah:

frames-wallpsper.jpg flowers-wallpaper.jpg

If you have a doodle-prone child, here’s the perfect solution: crayon-ready WOW wallpaper from UK company Graham & Brown. Cover a surface with the Frames pattern (left), and let your child go wild. Your budding artiste can paint on it directly or you can pin drawings or photos inside the frames. Another waiting-to-be-colored option: the company’s Flowers wallpaper (right).

Both are available for £20 a roll; Frames at Graham Brown and Flowers at Graham Brown.

A work in progress:

Furniture: Roy McMakin–Inspired Dressers

From Janet:

As a Seattle native, I’ve long been an admirer of artist and furniture maker Roy McMakin. His dressers in particular are a great way to add a bit of whimsy—and a dash of color—to a child’s room. Plus, it’s easy to replicate: take one classic wood dresser, choose two or three complimentary paint colors, and boldly go forth. To see more Roy McMakin pieces, go to Domestic Furniture.
