Some people swear by padded headboards, essential for comfortable bedtime reading. And upholstered headboards are one of the easiest DIY projects around; for step-by-step instructions on how to make your own, go to Real Simple.

Photograph from Living Etc.; headboard upholstered in Rapture & Wright’s Birds and Butterflies.
Alternatively, buy a simple headboard and create a slipcover with fabric by the yard (or a staple gun if you’re in a rush).

A while back we ran this image from Living Etc., and several readers inquired about the botanical graphic panel.

So we were pleased recently to discover British designer Tracy Kendall’s line of wall graphics, which includes the Heartweed pattern shown above. ID Chicago carries a selection of Kendall’s work, as does The Collection, the online shop of the celebrated Parisian store.

The combination of a sleek white metal bed frame, an ornate gilt mirror, an industrial table lamp, and a painted wood floor make for an appealing eclectic modern bedroom. Put together a similar look with the following elements.

Toast in the UK carries traditional Welsh tapestry bed covers, known as Carthennie in Welsh. The cloth is double woven, so the bedspreads can be used on either side. The double size is £225 and the king size is £245.

Ilse Crawford used classic Welsh tapestry blankets in her design for the restaurant at the Olde Bell Inn, draping them over high-backed settles from Labour and Wait and fastening them with bridle leather belts. Similar blankets can be found at Melin Tregwynt, a family-owned woollens mill in operation since 1912.

Ilse Crawford recently revamped the interiors of the Olde Bell Inn, an Elizabethan-era coaching inn located in the bucolic Berkshire village of Hurley in the English countryside. Crawford covered the floors with handwoven rush matting, installed Bestlite wall lamps, furnished the rooms with Ercol Windsor rocking chairs, and added a dash of red to the neutral color scheme with a Roberts Revival radio. We’ve admired the Magnetique shelves by Swen Krause for German company Nils Holger Moorman for a while now; unfortunately, we haven’t been able to find a retail source. We’ve rounded up some other shelving that can be ordered directly from the manufacturers.

Below: Although these metal ItBoxes are not as easily rearrangeable as the magnetic shelves, they can be fixed to the wall in any format. The ItBoxes are made of finely polished, color-anodized aluminum, come in 11 different sizes and 7 different colors, and are available from the Swiss firm ItDesign.

Below: On a more orthodox note, these straightforward Clever Wall Drawers designed by Markus Boge and Patrick Frey would work well in a variety of settings: beside a bed, in a hallway, or in a row above a desk. Available in four colors; small size is 89.60 Euros and the large size is 97.90 Euros from Manufactum.

Below: The PoggiBonsi shelf is made from a single sheet of steel and is available in five colors. 89 Euros at Atelier Haussmann in Berlin; also available at POAA in the Netherlands (they ship worldwide).

Below: The Brackets Included Shelves, designed by Sylvain Willenz, are $199 each at Gnr8.
