From Sarah:
I’ve walked past this Telluride, Colorado, house many times and admired the way it blends into the neighborhood yet has a quiet, modern edge. I was surprised to learn recently that this humble structure is, in fact, a John Pawson design. Despite its popularity with the jet set, downtown Telluride still likes to cling to its early mining roots, and this house manages to reference the town’s vernacular architecture with its pitched metal roof, weathered timber siding, and fieldstone foundation. The bedrooms are on the ground floor, and the living quarters are above, affording better views of the surrounding mountains. Via Push Pull Bar. For more John Pawson, go to our earlier posts Shopper’s Diary: Rose & Radish, Architect Visit: John Pawson, and Kitchen: John Pawson Pieces.

From Julie:
Washington, DC, architect Jeffery Broadhurst’s off-the-grid shack on South Fork Mountain in West Virginia won notice from Architectural Record Magazine, which called it “simplicity embodied.” The project was entirely DIY: “Broadhurst’s friends and neighbors helped him assemble it, using products pulled from the shelves of a home-improvement retailer. Simple board-and-batten siding and a standing-seam, terne-coated steel roof sits atop a wood platform supported by four pressure-treated pine posts.” Lit by oil lamps and heated with a woodstove, the 140-square-foot structure is accessible only with an off-road vehicle. Broadhurst calls it “a logical step between tent camping and the as-yet-unrealized weekend cottage.” Check out Materialicious for more information and for Broadhurst’s elevation drawings.

With offices in Manhattan and Montauk, architects Robert Young and Shea Murdock are equally at home designing houses in the Hamptons and galleries in Chelsea. This house on a lake in Montauk has a gallery-like austerity without being overly monastic.

We admire the work of Austrian firm PPAG, headed by Anna Popelka and Georg Podusch, especially their simple unpainted wood interiors, as in these projects designed for clients with limited budgets.

In our previous post, we looked at summer houses by Boston-based Sheila Narusawa. Here’s a city dwelling: a loft in Chelsea that is admirably streamlined and exhibits the same ineffably Asian/Scandi restraint as Narusawa’s summer houses.

Boston-based architect Sheila Narusawa was educated at the University of Michigan but has lived in Japan and Scandinavia; her eclectic design vocabulary is informed by both cultures, and works especially well in New England summer houses. We especially love her white spaces punctuated by black elements; view her work at Sheila Narusawa. First spotted on our favorite Materialicious.

It’s been uncharacteristically hot in the Bay Area this past week, which has prompted us to round up photos of some outdoor showers to cool off in. Also, see our post on Outdoor Shower Fixtures.

Seattle architect Roy McMakin of Domestic Architecture is fearless with color. We like the way he uses different shades of green in these detail shots from various projects.

Carola Vannini is an architect based in Rome; she has a degree from La Sapienze at the University of Rome and has studied in Paris and worked in New York at James Harb Architects. We love this project in Rome—the mix of rustic ancient and slick modern.
