Modern Barn Interior
Gustave Carlson Design is an award winning San Francisco Bay Area design firm specializing in custom home renovation, new house construction and sustainable design.
Our philosophy is that each project is to be designed around the specific needs of the client, site specification, and if applicable, the original or new architectural form. We believe the best design solution involves close collaboration with the client. We investigate the clients use of space, lifestyle and aesthetic. The design of schemes will reflect this understanding. Attention is given to the relationship between the interior and exterior of the house and its balance within the landscape. Our practice supports the use of green and sustainable materials and technologies of which we stay informed of the new product and leading industries. Our goal is to create a unique and well detailed home that will support your lifestyle and you may enjoy for generations.

Modern Barn Breakfast Room: The rustic cabin feel is maintained with the Western Red Cedar siding interior paneling of the breakfast room.
Modern Barn Porch: The large eaves frame outdoor room spaces such as covered porches and decking which blend into the landscape.
Marin Hillside View: This house strikes a balance between the modern pied-a-terre and a cozy retreat, while maximizing the remarkable view of the San Francisco Bay. Inspired by California modernism, the house renovation grazes on the natural landscape with the lightest touches.
Marin Hillside Cabinets: The Sycamore wood dining table is contracted by the custom Walnut cabinetry and floating shelves.
Mid-Century Modern Exterior: The renovation and addition to this home was inspired by the Eichler neighborhood and its surrounding vernacular.
Mid-Century Modern Bath: A skylight was site specific to draw in natural light enhancing the selection of organic materials used in the project.
Monterey Traditional Entry: A renovation to an existing prominent bay area architect, this complimentary addition and design solution retained the past forms of the large gambrel roof line of the main house. The roof form was rebuilt and provided a design opportunity to detail and preserve traditional methods of shingle style homes.
Monterey Traditional Kitchen: Traditional millwork details such as painted flush inset cabinetry were used and are complimented with custom craftsman tile backsplash and Mahogany wood island.
Modern Barn Exterior: This sustainable eco-friendly house on 3 acres gently unfolds into the landscape with a form conductive to passive solar design. The interior is anchored with a large board form concrete thermal mass fireplace. The rough texture is contrasted with smooth sustainable Teak flooring and the clean modern lines of the green cabinets. The powder coated transom windows offer air circulation and ventilation.
Modern Barn Bathroom: The master bath creates a strong interior/exterior relationship with a wood Teak floor and the seamless surround of the porcelain tub leading you to an exterior shower.
