Domestic spaces are the life-blood of Alex Scott Porter Design. We have a sustained interest in how people really live, and we create houses and apartments that can adapt and change with our clients. With both a home design and a furnishings division, our studio seamlessly provides a one-stop-shop -- creating comfortable, lived-in modern spaces replete with many custom features to help simplify and organize lives.
Our work is grounded in a sense of place, in sympathy and support of the lifestyle and life-view of our clients. We have developed a modern approach to design that is enhanced by a sophisticated palette of material finishes. We value the skillful detailing and finishing of materials, and we are fluent in juxtaposing the reclaimed, newly fabricated, rough and refined in support of this aesthetic. This flows naturally with our interest in sustainable building -- as we find beauty in the eccentricities of new technology and we appreciate materials that look better with age.
With a diverse background in architecture, fine arts and design-build construction, founding Principal Alex Scott Porter draws inspiration from the art world, traditional crafts, and the natural world. Growing up, Alex lived in a Brooklyn brownstone, a Nantucket whaling cottage, and a former sewing factory in Chelsea, informing her interest in the old and repurposed. Alex holds a Masters of Architecture degree from Columbia and has taught at Pratt’s School of Architecture.
