Accessories: Indoor Swing

From Julie:

The first architect-designed house I spent time in (by Harvard GSD professor Paul Mitarchi) was outfitted with an indoor swing. While the grownups discussed politics and drank wine, the children swung on the swing. This photo reminded me that for those lucky enough to live in large spaces with high ceilings, an indoor swing is a welcome diversion.

Shopper’s Diary: Greenhouse Eco-Friendly Living

 From Francesca:

The stretch of Atlantic Avenue between Beorum Hill and Brooklyn Heights is slowly become a shopping destination for high-end fashion and furnishings; the latest addition to the strip is Wilsey Wolf and Toni Nicolo’s shop Greenhouse Eco-Friendly Living. Furniture and accessories are carefully chosen to include only products produced by environmentally responsible manufacturers without sacrificing style; we especially like the earth-friendly upholstered pieces from Lee Industries Natural Lee line.

Bath: Green Room

From Julie:

Spotted in last week’s House & Home section of the New York Times: a truly green bath, in all senses of the word. Architect Joel Sanders, landscape designer Diana Balmori, and Andrea Steele of AND Architects created this room within a garden penthouse on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Peace lily, peperomia, and prayer plant climb up the master bath’s teak vanity and onto the lavastone walls, creating a curtain of verdant, air-purifying foliage.

Architect Visit: Feldman Architecture in San Francisco

From Janet:

Last weekend, I took the annual  AIA tour of Bay Area residences; one of the most appealing homes on the circuit was a 1906 Victorian Pacific Heights remodel by Feldman Architecture.  I was taken by the masterful blend of traditional and modern elements.  The Victorian bones of the building were preserved, yet a sense of modernity was conveyed by sliding interior barn doors, modern glass lighting fixtures, and fanciful touches such as the apple green front door. It all adds up to an incredibly livable family house. Plus, the architects incorporated multiple eco-friendly elements, including solar-powered radiant heat, photovoltaic roof, reclaimed flooring, cabinets and countertops made from recycled materials, and recycled denim insulation.

Lighting: David Weeks Castlight

From Francesca:

Brooklyn designer David Weeks’ Castlight is both a stylish candlestick and an LED flashlight with a rubberized grip. The candlestick glows from beneath when the flashlight is on, for double illumination, and when power outages occur, you have a working flashlight at the ready.

Black and white are not finishes that usually come to mind when selecting faucets; however, it’s worth considering Dornbracht’s elegant modern Tara Faucets in new black and white editions recently featured at London’s 100% Design festival. Go to Dornbracht to locate an authorized dealer.
