Appliances: Call Me

From Julie:

I’ve had it with cordless phones hidden under sofa cushions. For the past year or so, I’ve been yearning for the Ice Storm–era phone of my childhood, complete with clunky headpiece and Slinky-like spiral cord. A bit of sleuthing turned up some less-than-perfect alternatives: a Pottery Barn retro interpretation; a mysterious reconditioned Scandinavian phone. Then I came across Urban Outfitters’ Jenny phone and took the plunge. I’m happy to report that Jenny is everything I had hoped for: it’s got the heft, the lines, the typeface I remembered. Plus it’s energy efficient (doesn’t drain power all day and night like a cordless phone). And it emits a cheery brring (”Bank error in your favor!”) rather than an insistent electronic beep (”I’d like to see that report on my desk tomorrow”) when someone calls. Manufactured by Crosley (adapted from the famous Henry Dreyfuss–designed original) and available in black or white; $50 at urbanoutfitters.com:
