My mother-in-law, Sally, a classic WASP, says every room should have a touch of crimson. Being of Nordic extraction, I have an uneasy relationship with the color—we Scandis are uncomfortable with the idea of flaming red. But lately I’ve been noticing intriguing flashes of color that I can almost imagine using, such as the stairs painted red on the underside here:
